EL LUGAR DONDE IR A APLACAR LA SED
Hace pocas semanas Rate Beer dio a conocer los premios que otorgan a las cervezas, cervecerías y locales de cerveza artesana. Y hoy os queremos hablar de la categoría «Mejor bar de cerveza del mundo», ya que tuvimos la gran suerte de visitarlo hace dos domingos.
El «In de Verzekering tegen de Grote Dorst», destaca por varios motivos, y uno de ellos es el nombre tan fácilmente pronunciable y recordable, ¡desde luego cuando se lo pusieron no tuvieron en cuenta al resto de los mortales que no hablamos flamenco! Y que hemos traducido como: El lugar donde ir a aplacar la sed.
Actualmente lo llevan dos hermanos que lo tienen como hobby, y es por eso que solo abren los domingos de 10h a 13:30h, otro de los puntos curiosos que hacen destacar a este bar, aunque debido a la demanda han ampliado el horario hasta las 20h. También abren en días excepcionales, que suelen coincidir con festivos de la iglesia, funerales o en el caso que lo hayan alquilado. El pub se encuentra en el pequeño pueblo de Eizeringen, en la plaza de la iglesia, y forma parte de una de las esquinas de un curioso triángulo, que lo completan la iglesia de Santa Úrsula y el cementerio del pueblo, ambos a tan solo 40 metros del bar.
En él podemos encontrar a los parroquianos habituales, compartiendo mesa con algunos extranjeros venidos de todos los rincones del mundo. Es un pub de pueblo tradicional de Payor (una región belga), con suelos y paredes de madera. Tal como entras en el café, podrías pensar que una máquina del tiempo te ha transportado hasta finales de los años 40 o principios de los 50. Las paredes están llenas de motivos militares y el ambiente es acogedor. El curioso mostrador Art Déco y el reloj tipo Westminster atraen inmediatamente la atención de los visitantes. Kurt, el propietario, hizo todo lo posible para combinar el confort moderno con la autenticidad de esta pequeña parte del patrimonio flamenco. Y lo más importante, se pueden degustar algunas de sus apreciadas y variadas cervezas lámbicas, ya que tiene una de las selecciones más grandes de gueuze y kriek en el mundo. Dicho pub fue «descubierto» por casualidad para el gran público, cuando un autocar con un grupo de turistas ingleses paró en el pueblo a hacer un descanso y, a partir de ahí, empezó a correr la voz por foros especializados de internet.
HISTORIA
El pub es uno de los elementos clave del pueblo, que está parcialmente protegido por un decreto sobre el patrimonio flamenco.
Los archivos del Registro de la Propiedad confirman que la casa fue construida en 1842. En el pasado el pub era más pequeño. Antiguamente fue una tienda de caramelos.
Durante un tiempo pareció que a la gente de Eizeringen se quedarían sin su lugar donde ir a aplacar la sed. En 1999, Marguerite, de 85 años, dijo que en vísperas de Navidad abriría su última botella de cerveza. Había mantenido el pub abierto durante más de 51 años. Después de la Navidad del 99, la cortina caería definitivamente sobre el único pub que quedaba en la plaza de la iglesia de Eizeringen.
Pero lo inesperado sucedió. Los hermanos Panneels decidieron tomar el testigo del pub, preservar su nombre original y continuar con la tradición del pueblo.
Las obras de restauración duraron más de c
inco años (2001-2005). Kurt y su padre Maurice hicieron gran parte de las obras con sus propias manos. Tuvieron cuidado de no destruir el ambiente que reina en un pub belga tradicional.
Rápidamente «In Verzekering tegen de Grote Dorst» ganó una sólida reputación como pub donde disfrutar de un tradicional gueuze o kriek. Hoy en día el pub es conocido por los amantes de la cerveza de todo el mundo.
En 2009 ganó el premio «Mejor pub de Flandes». El concurso fue organizado por el programa de televisión Vlaanderen Vakantieland y Turismo de Flanders.
Desde septiembre de 2010 también aparece en la lista de los mejores locales de cerveza del mundo según Ratebeer.
En 2011 y 2012, el pub fue galardonado con un premio de oro Ratebeer en la categoría «Los mejores bares de cerveza del mundo».
En 2015 y 2016 fue nombrado «Mejor pub de cerveza de Bélgica» y «Mejor pub de cerveza del mundo».
En 2017 ha sido galoranado una vez más con el premio de oro de Ratebeer en la categoría «Los mejores bares de cerveza en el mundo».

IN THE INSURANCE AGAINST GREAT THIRST
A few weeks ago, Rate Beer announced the prizes awarded to beers, breweries and craft beer pubs. And today we want to talk about the category «Best beer bar in the world», since we were lucky to visit it two Sundays ago.
The «In de Verzekering tegen de Grote Dorst» stands out for several reasons, and one of them is the name so easily to pronounce and remember! Certainly when they named it did not take into account the poor people who do not speak Flemish! The translation would be: The place where to go to quench the thirst.
The Paneels brothers took it over as a hobby, and that is why they only open Sundays from 10am to 1.30pm, another of the curious things that make this bar stands out, although due to the high demand they have extended the schedule to the 8pm. They also open on exceptional days, which usually coincide with church holidays, funerals or in the event they have rented it. The pub is located in the small village of Eizeringen, in the square of the church, and is part of one of the corners of an odd triangle, which is completed by the church of St. Ursula and the village cemetery, both just 40 meters from the bar.
In it we can find the usual regular customers, sharing a table with some foreigners from all corners of the world. It is a traditional village pub in Payor (a Belgian region) with wooden floors and walls. As you enter the cafe, you might think that a time machine has transported you until the late 1940s or early 1950s. The walls are filled with military motives and the atmosphere is cozy. The curious Art Deco counter and the Westminster clock immediately attract the attention of visitors. Kurt, the owner, did his best to combine modern comfort with the authenticity of this small part of the Flemish heritage. And most importantly, you can taste some of its appreciated and varied beers, as it has one of the largest selections of gueuze and kriek in the world. This pub was «discovered» by chance for the general public, when a coach with a group of English tourists stopped in the village to take a break and they began to spread the word through specialized forums of internet.
HISTORY
The pub is one of the key elements of the village, which is partly protected by a Flemish heritage decree.
The archives of the Land Register confirm that the house was built in 1842. In the past the pub was smaller. The pub was a candy store before.
For a while it seemed that the people of Eizeringen would no longer be insured against big thirst. In 1999, the 85-year old Marguerite said that on Christmas eve she would uncork her last bottle of beer. She kept the local pub open for more than 51 years. After Christmas 99 the curtain would definitively fall over the only pub left at the church square of Eizeringen.
But the unexpected happened. The Panneels brothers decided to take over the pub, to preserve the original pub name and to continue the village tradition.
The restoration works took more than five years (2001-2005). Kurt and his father Maurice did a large part of the works themselves. They took care not to destroy the typical atmosphere, which reigns in a traditional Belgian pub.
Soon ‘In de Verzekering tegen de Grote Dorst’ gained a solid reputation as an inn where one can enjoy a traditional gueuze and kriek. Nowadays, the pub is known by beer lovers from all over the world.
In 2009 the pub won the award ‘Beste pub of Flanders’. The contest was organised by the tv programme Vlaanderen Vakantieland and Tourism Flanders.
Since September 2010, ‘In de Verzekering tegen de Grote Dorst‘ is also listed in Ratebeer‘s list of best beer destinations of the world.
In 2011 and 2012, the pub was awarded a Ratebeer Gold Award in the category ‘Best Beer bars in the World’.
In 2015 en 2016 ‘In de Verzekering tegen de Grote Dorst’ was named ‘Best Beer Bar in Belgium’ and ‘Best Beer Bar in the World’.
